Hold onto your wallets UFC Fans, the next couple of months could be a rocky ride.
No doubt about it, the world’s largest MMA promotion started 2009 with
a bang with its much-talked about superfight rematch between Georges
St. Pierre and B.J. Penn at UFC 94. The January 31 extravaganza lived
up to the substantial hype and then some, if you consider not only the
action inside the cage but also the fallout stemming from allegations
that St. Pierre employed a “greasing agent” during his utter
destruction of Penn.
Turns out, that first event just had to be great because … well … the
cupboard is looking pretty bare through May or so, in terms of great
fights. Not that that fact is stopping the UFC from scheduling a crush
of underwhelming programming between now and then.
It begs the questions: As the UFC continues to add to its already
relentless avalanche of pay-per-views even as the current economic
crisis deepens, will people continue to pay for these crappy cards? And
(no pun intended) ultimately, how much UFC is too much UFC?
The Zuffa hype machine is doing its best to give UFC 96 some legs. This 10 minutes of video does actually get us a bit more stoked about the March 7 event – which is to say on a scale of one to 10 our excitement has ratcheted up to about a 2.4.
Lipstick on a pig, Dana, lipstick on pig.
While not exactly as epic as the countdown for GSP vs. Penn, this piece is still illuminating. Here’s five things we learned from watching it …
Perhaps as a part of a continuing quest to find new and interesting ways to get his ass kicked, former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia has agreed to face former WBO champ Ray Mercer in a boxing match, according to a report by MMA Junkie .
Yeah, this one has us appropriately stumped, too. We have no idea why this seems like something Sylvia would want to do. Or why promoters of Adrenaline MMA think this is something people would want to watch.
Oh, well. More power to the big fella. Who knows, maybe he’ll win. Mercer is 47 and recently got tapped by Kimbo Slice.
Of course, Kimbo had the added luxury of a legal ground game.
