The inconvenient truth about Anderson Silva

ImageWell, that didn’t go as planned. The back-to-basics, no-nonsense, badass Anderson Silva that many media types predicted would make a triumphant return at UFC 97 didn’t show up on Saturday night. Instead, the UFC middleweight champ turned in a performance against Thales Leites that was very reminiscent of his disappointing showing against Patrick Cote last time out at UFC 90.

Amidst a chorus of boos from the Canadian faithful and an opponent who wouldn’t engage, Silva resorted to the same shuck-and-jive style that earned so many bad reviews after the Cote fight six months ago. Fans, promoters and journalists alike were all left wondering: WTF?

On one hand, it’s a testament to Silva’s dominance that we’re having this conversation simply because his last two wins weren’t quite as awesome as the previous seven in the Octagon. On the other hand, there is definitely something going on with “The Spider.”

What on earth is it? You might not like it, but we’ve got some ideas …

Nobody wants Thales Leites to win anyway, right?

One thing we know for sure about American sports fans is that we love to cheer for the underdog. There is something about a scrappy, against-all-odds Cinderella story that stokes the fires in our bellies. Perhaps on some level we believe that if Buster Douglas can fell Mike Tyson or tiny George Mason University can race all the way to the NCAA Final Four then our own prospects are also limitless. Maybe, in another life, that could’ve been us in that ring or on that stage.

However, this warm and fuzzy feeling of goodwill apparently does not apply to Thales Leites. Nobody seems particularly interested in seeing him do the impossible.
